About YourGuitarLife.com :

"Life isn't fair." But Your Guitar Life is. Practice and you will get better. Put in the time on a song, and you will know it. Give of yourself, and the guitar will give back more than you put in. Practice is always met with achievement. Dedication and sacrifice are always met with satisfaction and a sense of pride. Your Guitar Life can't be given or taken, only earned.
"Sometimes you have to do things you don't want to." But Your Guitar Life allows you to do exactly what you want, the results lead only to other things you want. Don't want to practice -7b5 chords? Don't. You can still rock out as hard as you want. Of course, I will always push you to be a well-rounded musician, but if you want to chug along on one chord, or play lead all day, you can... it's Your Guitar Life.
"Life will throw you curve balls." Well, there are curve balls in Your Guitar Life too. Do I really have to wear a mariachi outfit for this gig? Seriously though, for the most part, playing music is pretty straight forward. When life gets hard Your Guitar Life stays simple. Your instrument takes your stress, it takes your frustration, and it gives you relief and joy. It also reminds you that the real world isn't that much more complicated than Your Guitar Life.
"But what about the children?!?" Music is a great way to teach kids the joy of learning and the pride that comes a job done so well that people say, "Wow!" Learning a music instrument can also help students with math, reading, and fine motor skills. Most importantly, music teaches kids how to immerse themselves in learning -- to set goals and achieve them.

About Devon McCarthy:

In 25+ years of playing guitar, I've learned to adapt to a wide variety of playing styles. With a classic rock upbringing, the guitar was a natural choice. At age 16, I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn for the first time and immersed myself in the blues. The next phase was to add runs and steal some prog rock elements from people like Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson. I studied with a great guitarist named Bob Prince, who taught me a ton, including some classical guitar, which got me in shape for college. While studying at Five Towns College of Music, I continued learning about jazz, improv, and the fundamentals of harmony and theory.
After college, I taught guitar lessons at Long Beach School of Music in Long Beach, NY. I loved teaching, but I wanted to know more about how this amazing instrument that I loved was created. Soon, I found myself on the internet looking for guitar building schools and I found the Summit School of Guitar Building and Repair. I spent 6 months with them, in British Colombia, living in a cabin and doing nothing all day but playing and building guitars.
When I returned from luthier school, I began working at Brian Moore Guitars, in Poughkeepsie, NY. After spending a year wet sanding guitar bodies, I finally got to work in the custom shop where their amazing guitars are hand-made. Over the course of the next 6+ years, I helped to build hundreds of custom shop guitars and set up or repair thousands of their imported guitars.
In the years that followed I have been blessed to play in some great bands, with amazing musicians. I've also been able to pass on my passion for guitar to numerous students. This website can't possibly contain the love and joy that I get from playing, but it is a small portion of My Guitar Life.
