Bass Lessons FAQ
Austin and Surrounding Areas
How comfortable are you teaching beginners who've never had a lesson?
Very Comfortable. With guitar as my primary instrument, I have trained a lot of "bass player for a night" players. I find that with bass, it's an easier instrument to become proficient at, but a very difficult instrument to master.
How do you prefer to start off teaching a raw beginner? (notes, slapping and fingering, etc...)
The most important question a student can ask is, "What do I want to know?" Depending on the student, the first lesson can include note identification, rhythms, bass lines, or just how to hold the bass.
What ages are you comfortable with teaching?
Well, I won't teach babies. The bass simply doesn't fit well in their little hands... very frustrating. Seriously though, I'm comfortable teaching students age 8 & up. If you're over 70, I'll teach you for free!!
What about just helping people work on a specific song?
Absolutely! I love learning songs, and I'm happy to teach you how to play them correctly. The internet is great, but the chords and tablature online have more misinformation than the National Enquirer.
And helping them find their own sound?
I love this... it's a two-parter:
-Over the years, I have owned and played a lot of gear. Add to that, my time working at music store where I got to play with even more. I know tone, and I know how to get it.
-Once you've found your sound, the next step is finding your voice. It could happen in a week, or it could happen in 10 years, but when you find it... that's where the magic happens.
Would you consider yourself able to teach "advanced" bass players?
Unfortunately, being only a decent bass player myself I am only confident teaching beginner and intermediate players.
When did you teach your first bass lesson?
About a year after I started playing guitar I picked up a bass. Having done so much work on the guitar, the bass came quickly, and I found myself teaching friends how to play bass when we jammed, so we could switch instruments between songs.
Do you have a specific style or genre you are better or worse at teaching?
I am comfortable teaching rock, blues, jazz, funk, country, alternative.. My favorite, though, is the blues.
How often would you ideally meet with students? (Weekly, monthly, etc)
Once a week is a good start. It depends on how often the student practices. Faster progress demands more knowledge.
Where do the lessons take place?
They can take place in the comfort of your home or in my studio.
How far are you willing to drive to meet a student?
I can travel anywhere in the Austin area, but would prefer to stay within a 45 minute drive. Travel charges may apply, if outside of this range.
